How to Sell More Service Work Without Sounding Like a Salesperson
Selling recommended service work does not have to feel pushy.
The goal is to advise the guest, build value, and with confidence ask for the business.
Remember: the technician video is a tool. It cannot replace the service advisor picking up the phone and selling the value.
The 4-Step Service ASR Process
1. GREAT NEWS
Start with what came back in good condition from the MPI.
Tires, brakes, battery, fluids. Whatever is positive on the vehicle.
This immediately positions you as an advisor instead of someone calling only to sell something.
2. ADDRESS THE CONCERN
Handle the reason the guest came in before discussing additional recommendations.
If they came in for a vibration, warning light, or noise, address that first.
Otherwise, everything that follows can feel like an upsell.
3. PACKAGE TOGETHER
Do not make the conversation feel bigger by breaking every recommendation's cost apart.
Clearly explain what was found, package the ASRs together, explain the why, and quote as a total price.
Keep it simple and clean.
4. ASK FOR THE SALE
Do not finish with:
“What do you want to do?”
Make a recommendation.
“My recommendation is to take care of these items while the vehicle is already here. I can still have the vehicle ready by 5:00p. Would it be okay to proceed?”
A closed mouth doesn't get fed.
Sell the Value
Do not just explain what the vehicle needs.
Explain why it matters.
WHAT WE FOUND → WHY IT MATTERS → BENEFIT TO THE GUEST → ASK FOR THE SALE
Connect the repair to safety, reliability, convenience, performance, or preventing a larger problem later.
And most importantly:
Do not sell scared.
You are not pressuring the guest by making a legitimate recommendation.
You are doing your job as an advisor.
Start with the positive and explain the value clearly... while remembering to ask for the sale.
