Why the Phone Still Wins: Converting More Internet Leads with MOVE

In today’s automotive retail environment, internet leads are abundant. Why? Every guest starts their journey online… However, real engagement is not.

Most sales professionals know the phone is the fastest path to connection, trust, and ultimately an appointment. Yet many rely too heavily on email and text, oftentimes going too deep into the conversation with the guest, hoping the guest will just come in.

Hope is not a strategy.

If your goal is to convert more internet leads into real conversations and real conversations into sold vehicles… the phone must remain central to your process.

Not because it’s old school, but because it works.

This is where the TRUSkills MOVE Framework becomes critical.

Why the Phone Matters

When you’re speaking with a guest, you gain immediate advantages that written communication simply cannot provide:

  • You hear tone, urgency, hesitation, and confidence

  • You can match and guide their energy in real time

  • You can ask better questions and get better answers

  • You build trust faster

Connections happen through real conversation. The phone allows for that.

But here’s the reality: guests don’t owe anything… they don’t have to get on a call with you.

Which brings us to the real issue.

“Of Course I Want Them on the Phone… But They Won’t Call Me”

This is where most breakdowns occur.

Salespeople know they want the guest on the phone, but their written communication gives the guest no compelling reason to engage.

Generic templates.

Copy-and-paste responses.

Messages that prove you didn’t slow down long enough to actually read the lead.

If your email looks like every other dealership email, you’ll get the same result: silence.

Written communication alone isn’t going to close the deal.

Its job is to earn a conversation.

Applying the MOVE Framework to Internet Leads

M – Map the Guest

Before you respond, slow down.

What do you actually know about this guest?

Even in a vague inquiry—“Do you have this car in stock?”—there is information to map:

  • The vehicle itself

  • The time of inquiry

  • The platform they used to source the vehicle

  • The age of the vehicle

Mapping the guest means you’re tailoring your response to where the guest is at in their buying journey.

Your responses are helping to move the guest through their buying journey… not create anxiety.

O – Outline the Path

Guests hesitate to respond when they don’t know what happens next.

Your written communication should clearly and confidently outline the path forward:

  • What you’re going to do for them

  • What you’ll provide

  • Why a quick conversation makes it easier

Instead of asking, “When can you talk?” try outlining value:

“A quick call is often the best way for me to answer your questions and make sure I’m being as helpful as possible.”

You’re not trying to sell. You’re offering service.

V – Vibe

Tone matters.

What is the guest’s tone? People buy from people they like.

Your vibe should be:

  • Pleasant

  • Confident

  • Helpful

  • Professional

This is where many internet responses fail. They sound rushed, scripted, or transactional.

Your goal is simple: be the person they’d actually want to talk to.

E – Execute

Execution is where intent turns into results.

When a guest’s inquiry is vague, your responsibility is to create direction. Engagement doesn’t happen by accident; it happens when you deliberately guide the conversation toward the next step.

This is where many salespeople fall short. They respond politely, provide information, and stop there.

Remember, a closed mouth doesn’t get fed and politeness without purpose won’t get you paid.

One of the most effective ways to execute with purpose is personalized video.

A short, authentic video immediately:

  • Demonstrates effort and professionalism

  • Humanizes you

  • Creates curiosity and trust

More importantly, you create value that allows you to ask for the next step…. a conversation, an appointment, or an appropriate call to action.

A guest may ignore another email, but they will often open a video. And once they’ve seen you, heard you, and felt your energy, the phone call or appointment feels natural, not pressured.

Execution isn’t just responding.

  • It’s guiding.

  • It’s asking.

  • It’s moving the guest forward.

That’s execution with purpose.

The Bottom Line

The phone isn’t outdated… It's powerful.

Written communication is to give the guest a reason to talk to you.

When you:

  • Map the guest

  • Outline a clear path

  • Bring the right vibe

  • Execute with purpose

You stop chasing responses… you start getting more engagement.

That’s how internet leads turn into appointments.

And appointments turn into deliveries.

MOVE with purpose.
